The Religious Sense: Leopardi

Wherefore those many nights,
That boundless atmosphere,
And infinite calm sky?
And what the meaning
Of this vast solitude?
And what am I?

Giacomo Leopardi

(translated from Italian, of course)

The poem feels incomplete, maybe since there are so many psalms that echoe the same sentiments turn around 180 degrees to exalt God?
You could have let it be in the italian -pretty- even though we don't understand it.

Here is the Italian:

A che tante facelle?
Che fa l'aria infinita, e quel profondo
Infinito seren? che vuol dir questa
Solitudine immensa? ed io che sono?

Yes, it is incomplete in the sense Megan suggests. There is some movement in the poem, but as with many Leopardi poems, the "completeness" or answer he longs for is not explicitly given.
